Privacy Policy
This Is A Clue runs live bar trivia across Colorado. This page explains, in plain language, what information we collect, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and how to tell us to stop. We have tried to write it so you can actually read it.
What we collect
There are two kinds, and that is the whole list.
- Things you type into a form. A venue inquiry, a private-event request, a host application, a contact message, or a Clue Drop entry. Typically your name, email, phone number, team name, and whatever you write to us.
- Things your browser tells us. Which pages you viewed, roughly which city you are in, what kind of device you used, and what you clicked. This comes from Vercel Analytics, Microsoft Clarity, and the Meta pixel, described below. Mapbox serves the map tiles on our schedule page.
There are no accounts to create and nothing to pay for on this site. We do not sell your personal information.
Clue Drop
If you scan a table tent at a trivia night and submit the form, we email you a clue toward that night's hardest question. To do that we keep your first name, email, team name, team size, and which venue and night you scanned at. The team name and team size also tell us how our games are going, which is genuinely useful to us and to the venues we work with.
The clue is not a signup. You asked for it, we send it, and that is the end of it. There is a separate optional tick on the form that says you would like to hear what is on at This Is A Clue. If you tick it, we add you to that list. If you do not, we do not, and the only email you will ever get from Clue Drop is the clue you asked for.
Clue Drop is for people 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Advertising and analytics
We advertise on Facebook and Instagram, and we use the Meta pixel on this site to understand which ads bring people to a trivia night and to build audiences of people who have shown interest.
For people who ticked the box to hear from us, we may also share a scrambled (hashed) version of an email address with Meta so they can match it to an account and show that person our ads. A hash is a one-way scramble, so Meta does not receive the address itself. This never includes anyone who did not tick the box. If you only wanted a clue, we do not hand your details to an advertising platform.
We also use Vercel Analytics, which counts page views without cookies and cannot identify you, and Microsoft Clarity, which records anonymised session replays so we can see where the site is confusing. Clarity does not run on the Clue Drop pages, because those pages exist for you to type an email address and we would rather not record that at all.
Your choices
- Stop the emails. Every email we send has an unsubscribe link. Use it and we stop, usually immediately and always within ten business days.
- See it or delete it. Email info@thisisaclue.com and we will tell you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. We do this within 30 days. You do not need to give a reason.
- Turn off the advertising and session tools. If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control signal, we honour it automatically. The Meta pixel and Clarity will not run. You do not have to ask us, and there is no banner to click.
How long we keep things
- If you ticked the box: until you unsubscribe, or until two years pass with no sign you want to hear from us, whichever comes first.
- If you did not tick the box: 90 days. Your details did their job the moment your clue sent.
- Clue Drop night data(which team scanned in which order): 7 days. It exists only to order one evening's clues.
- Inquiries and applications: as long as we are working together, or as long as our tax and business records require.
Who processes data for us
Service providers handle data on our behalf so the site and our business work: Resend and Google (email), TrustPager (our customer records), Vercel (hosting and analytics), Sanity (site content), Microsoft (Clarity), Mapbox (maps), Upstash (the Clue Drop night counters), and Meta (advertising, as described above).
